How much did European AI startups raise in H1 2026?
European startups raised $40.06B across 901 artificial intelligence deals in the first half of 2026. The count covers AI companies across the Europe-34 country set, which spans European Union member states alongside non-EU markets including the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway.
Capital concentration explains the gap between the mean and the median. 118 mega-rounds of $50M or more absorbed $32.78B, which is 81.8% of every dollar that went into European AI companies in the window. Narrow the cut and 65 rounds of $100M or more took $29.42B, or 73.4% of the total.
At the other end, 319 rounds priced between $1M and $5M took $815.33M between them, and 132 rounds priced between $5M and $10M took $920.78M. Another 46 rounds came in under $1M, for $23.80M in total.
The composition of the money is the second thing to check, and it is where Europe reads differently from a standard venture market. 14 debt rounds carried $5.40B and two convertible notes carried $4.33B. Most of that capital is written against data centre and compute capacity, so a meaningful slice of the European topline is credit and paper rather than priced equity.
European AI funding H1 2026 by quarter: Q1 vs Q2
| Quarter | Deals | Funding | Median deal | Mean deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 401 | $19.41B | $7.50M | $48.41M |
| Q2 2026 | 470 | $20.65B | $6.57M | $43.93M |
Funding rose 6.4% quarter over quarter and deal count rose by 69. The mean round eased from $48.41M to $43.93M and the median from $7.50M to $6.57M. Europe added volume at a slightly lower average price, which is a different pattern from a market carried by two or three financings.
Monthly totals show where the lumps sit. March closed at $11.68B, up 177.8% from February and the peak of the half, carried by the Nebius and Nscale rounds. April fell to $4.18B, down 64.2%, on 148 deals, almost the same deal count as March.
May rebounded to $9.89B, up 136.7%, and June settled at $6.58B across 171 deals, the busiest month of the six by count. Deal count climbed from 107 in January to 171 in June and never dropped by more than one round month to month. Dollars swung by more than a factor of three across the same months.
Largest European AI funding rounds in H1 2026
| Rank | Company | Metro | Amount | Round | Closed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Nebius | Amsterdam | $4.3B | Convertible Note | March 2026 |
| 2 | Pure DC | London | $2.7B | Debt Financing | May 2026 |
| 3 | Isomorphic Labs | London | $2.1B | Series B | May 2026 |
| 4 | Nscale | London | $2.0B | Series C | March 2026 |
| 5 | NEURA Robotics | Metzingen | Up to $1.4B | Series C, milestone-contingent | June 2026 |
| 6 | Wayve | London | $1.2B | Series D | February 2026 |
| 7 | Ineffable Intelligence | London | $1.1B | Seed | April 2026 |
| 8 | Advanced Machine Intelligence | Paris | $1.03B | Seed | March 2026 |
| 9 | Mistral AI | Paris | $830.0M | Debt Financing | March 2026 |
| 10 | Nscale | London | $790.0M | Debt Financing | May 2026 |
NEURA Robotics announced its Series C as up to $1.4 billion, a ceiling released against milestones across three tranches rather than a single closed cheque. The company has not disclosed how much of it is drawn. It sits in the table at the announced figure, and it is the one round here that may never arrive in full.
Those ten rounds hold about 43.6% of all European AI funding in the half. Six went to London companies and two to Paris companies, so eight of Europe’s ten largest AI rounds closed in two cities. Nscale appears twice, once for a March Series C and once for a May debt facility. The wider London AI company list shows the bench underneath those headline rounds.
Four of the ten are not equity. Nebius took a $4.3B convertible note, Pure DC borrowed $2.7B to build data centres, and Mistral AI and Nscale financed $830.0M and $790.0M through lenders rather than priced rounds. Between them those four moved $8.62B, more than the entire Series B stage raised across Europe this half, which came to $5.02B across 57 deals.
Two entries near the bottom of the table are seed rounds at a size Europe rarely prints. Ineffable Intelligence raised $1.1B at seed in London and Advanced Machine Intelligence raised $1.03B at seed in Paris. Both are frontier AI companies, and both skipped the usual path where a Series A round is the first large cheque.
Which sectors raised the most European AI funding in H1 2026?
| Segment | Funding | Deals | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure | $11.04B | 86 | 27.6% |
| Manufacturing & Industrials | $5.28B | 101 | 13.2% |
| Energy & Sustainability | $4.85B | 64 | 12.1% |
| Health & Biotech | $4.58B | 142 | 11.4% |
| FinTech | $3.43B | 102 | 8.6% |
| Transportation & Mobility | $1.97B | 33 | 4.9% |
| GovTech & Defense | $1.60B | 34 | 4.0% |
| Legal Tech | $916.10M | 20 | 2.3% |
| Enterprise Software | $876.09M | 38 | 2.2% |
| Retail & E-Commerce | $870.17M | 35 | 2.2% |
Developer Tools and AI Infrastructure took 27.6% of European AI dollars across 86 deals. That segment holds the GPU clouds, the data centre builds and the AI labs, so Nebius, Nscale and Mistral AI land here. The AI infrastructure list covers the compute layer globally.
Physical categories are where Europe separates itself. Manufacturing and Industrials took 13.2% on 101 deals and Energy and Sustainability took 12.1% on 64 deals, and both raise at a size European software rarely reaches. Grid capacity and industrial robotics are deep tech categories competing for AI dollars with the compute layer rather than sitting far behind it.
The niche cut says the same thing more plainly. AI Agents drew $6.99B across 302 deals, the highest deal count of any European niche, at a fraction of the cheque size. Data Management drew $5.72B across 89 deals and Conservation Technology drew $4.50B across 69.
Robotics drew $3.61B across 62 deals and Drug Discovery $3.36B across 45. Europe’s founder volume is in agents and applied software. Europe’s capital volume is in things that get built.
Rank the segments by deal count and the order rearranges again. Health and Biotech ran 142 rounds, more than any other segment, for 11.4% of the dollars. FinTech ran 102 rounds for 8.6%, and Developer Tools and AI Infrastructure took more money than either on 86.
European AI funding by stage in H1 2026: early stage vs late stage
| Stage | Deals | Funding |
|---|---|---|
| Seed | 282 | $3.86B |
| Series A | 170 | $4.93B |
| Pre-Seed | 162 | $405.38M |
| Other | 113 | $1.60B |
| Series B | 57 | $5.02B |
| Growth | 55 | $4.05B |
| Series C | 28 | $5.75B |
| Series D | 15 | $3.93B |
| Debt | 14 | $5.40B |
| Convertible | 2 | $4.33B |
| Series G+ | 1 | $553.57M |
| Series E | 1 | $200.00M |
| Series F | 1 | $38.06M |
Early-stage funding dominates the count. European seed produced 282 venture rounds for $3.86B, Series A produced 170 rounds for $4.93B, and pre-seed produced 162 rounds for $405.38M.
The dollars sit elsewhere. Series C took $5.75B across 28 rounds and Series D took $3.93B across 15, and the two convertible notes took $4.33B on their own. Our stage-by-stage breakdown sets those bands in a longer context.
Debt is the line worth reading twice. 14 debt rounds raised $5.40B, more than the entire Series B stage ($5.02B across 57 deals) and more than the entire Series A stage ($4.93B across 170 deals). Debt ranks second by dollars among every stage bucket in Europe, and it gets there on 14 financings.
Lenders pricing data centre capacity against contracted revenue is a different underwriting exercise from a venture fund pricing a growth round. This half it moved more money through Europe than two traditional venture stages.
Early-stage pricing sat far below all of this. 256 rounds cleared between $10M and $50M for $5.53B, and 53 rounds cleared between $50M and $100M for $3.36B. Neither band moved because of the billion-dollar financings above it.
Where European AI venture capital landed by metro in H1 2026
| Metro | Funding | Deals | Share | Mean deal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| London | $17.30B | 224 | 43.2% | $77.24M |
| Amsterdam | $4.67B | 14 | 11.7% | $333.59M |
| Paris | $4.04B | 58 | 10.1% | $69.74M |
| Berlin | $1.80B | 44 | 4.5% | $40.96M |
| Metzingen | $1.40B | 1 | 3.5% | $1,400.00M |
| Stockholm | $1.17B | 30 | 2.9% | $39.09M |
| Dublin | $672.12M | 21 | 1.7% | $32.01M |
| Munich | $524.59M | 29 | 1.3% | $18.09M |
| Barcelona | $513.02M | 26 | 1.3% | $19.73M |
| Espoo | $413.33M | 4 | 1.0% | $103.33M |
London took 43.2% of European AI capital on 224 rounds, more money and more deals than any other metro by a wide margin. Its $77.24M mean round sits above Paris at $69.74M and Berlin at $40.96M. London leads on dollars and on deal count at the same time, which no other European metro does.
Second place needs a second look. Amsterdam booked 11.7% of European dollars across 14 deals at a mean of $333.59M, and $4.3B of its $4.67B is the single Nebius convertible note.
Metzingen is the cleaner case of the same effect. It ranks fifth in Europe on 3.5% of the half’s dollars from exactly one round, NEURA Robotics, so its total and its mean deal size are the same number, and that number is a contingent ceiling. Paris (58 deals), Berlin (44) and Stockholm (30) run far more activity than Amsterdam on comparable or smaller totals. The Nordic AI breakdown covers Sweden, Finland and Norway in detail.
Concentration reads tighter on dollars than on activity. The top five metros hold 73.0% of located capital and the top ten hold 81.2%, while deals were recorded across 192 separate European locations. Below the top three, Dublin (21 deals), Munich (29) and Barcelona (26) are the metros running repeat volume without a mega-round propping up the total.
Which investors backed the most European AI rounds in H1 2026?
| Investor | Rounds | Deals joined worth | Median cheque band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Y Combinator | 18 | $787.41M | $10.72M |
| Antler | 17 | $62.03M | $2.65M |
| Index Ventures | 16 | $2.54B | $64.71M |
| High-Tech Gründerfonds | 15 | $112.14M | $3.00M |
| General Catalyst | 14 | $1.91B | $67.00M |
| Seedcamp | 14 | $328.95M | $6.63M |
| British Business Bank | 13 | $3.03B | $39.21M |
| CDP Venture Capital | 13 | $447.03M | $8.25M |
| Speedinvest | 13 | $221.06M | $8.00M |
| Kima Ventures | 12 | $268.36M | $3.27M |
Y Combinator joined 18 European AI rounds and Antler joined 17, more than any other backer. Antler’s median round was $2.65M and its largest was $18.0M, the tightest range in the table. Y Combinator’s median sits at $10.72M, but one of its rounds was Legora’s $550M Series D, which is most of the $787.41M beside its name.
Three of the ten most active names answer to a government. High-Tech Gründerfonds (Germany) joined 15 rounds, and British Business Bank (United Kingdom) and CDP Venture Capital (Italy) joined 13 each. That puts public institutions in the same activity band as Index Ventures at 16 and General Catalyst at 14.
The cheque sizes are nothing alike. High-Tech Gründerfonds joined 15 rounds at a median of $3.00M. British Business Bank joined 13 at a median of $39.21M, into a book worth $3.03B. Same rate of participation, opposite end of the size range.
Rounds joined counts every participant in a round, so these totals describe participation rather than dollars deployed by each firm, and they cannot be added together.
What H1 2026 says about European AI venture capital
Read the tables together and European AI investment looks steadier than a single headline number suggests. Funding rose 6.4% between quarters and deal count rose in every month but one, so the half grew on volume rather than on one outsized round landing in one month.
The composition is where the caution belongs. 81.8% of European AI capital sits in 118 large rounds of $50M or more, and the debt and convertible lines together carry a large share of the topline, written against compute and data centre capacity. Credit against data centres reprices when rates or demand move. The seed book does not.
Strip the big financings out and Europe is a market with a $6.92M median round, 282 seed deals, 170 Series A deals and 192 recorded locations. For founders, European early-stage pricing was stable and small, and the two billion-dollar seed rounds this half went to model companies rather than to the applied software layer where most European founders operate.
For investors, any European VC benchmark built off the $46.00M mean prices a company against 118 rounds it will never resemble. Comparable sizing belongs to the $6.92M median layer, and that is the layer to underwrite against in the second half of 2026. Our 2025 funding statistics and the top European rounds of 2025 give the prior-year base for that comparison.

Y Combinator joined 18 rounds, Antler 17, Index Ventures 16, High-Tech Gründerfonds 15, and General Catalyst and Seedcamp 14 each. Three of the ten most active backers are public institutions.
Based on 901 European AI funding rounds tracked by Bot Memo between January 1, 2026 and June 30, 2026, across the Europe-34 country set. 30 of those 901 rounds closed without a disclosed amount. They count towards the 901 headline figure and carry no dollars, and they sit outside the quarterly and monthly tables, which is why those deal counts sum to 871 rather than 901.
Mega rounds are rounds of $50M or larger. Metro figures merge variant spellings of the same city, so London covers both the city-only and country-suffixed records. Metro shares are calculated on the capital that carries an identified location. Companies operating across multiple segments or cities are counted in each, so segment and metro totals overlap and cannot be summed.
Companies our classification records as industrial rather than AI businesses are excluded from this cut, along with rounds we have confirmed as a second write-up of a financing already counted. That is why Sweden’s H1 2026 total here sits below the figure carried in our Nordic breakdown, which reports the region’s full industrial and AI activity side by side. NEURA Robotics is carried at its announced ceiling of up to $1.4B, which is released against milestones rather than drawn in full at close.
Investor totals reflect participation in a round, not exclusive deployment. Median cheque bands are the median size of the rounds each firm joined. Rounds announced in euro, pound sterling and Swedish krona are reported in dollars.
