Total AI funding in August 2026: how much did AI startups raise?

AI companies raised $33.01B across 396 deals in August 2026. Of those, 347 rounds disclosed an amount, and they set a median of $10M and a mean of $95.13M. The mean sits more than nine times above the median because a small number of very large rounds carry most of the dollars.

In all, 75 mega-rounds of $50M or more took $29.89B, or 90.5% of the month’s AI funding. Move the line up to $100M and 49 rounds still took $28.19B, 85.4% of the total. The rest of the funding came in much smaller checks. Another 103 rounds between $10M and $50M took $2.45B, 65 rounds between $5M and $10M took $457.31M, and 90 rounds between $1M and $5M took $214.13M.

Round size Funding Deals Share of funding
Under $1M $7.79M 14 under 0.1%
$1M to $5M $214.13M 90 0.6%
$5M to $10M $457.31M 65 1.4%
$10M to $50M $2.45B 103 7.4%
$50M to $100M $1.69B 26 5.1%
$100M or more $28.19B 49 85.4%

Debt and strategic money also move the headline. Debt financings came to $3.19B across 10 deals, 9.7% of the month and more than all 18 Series C rounds combined at $3.00B. Strategic investments added $6.50B across 3 deals, almost all of it Databricks’ $5B round and NVIDIA’s $1.5B stake in SB Energy.

Largest AI funding rounds in August 2026

Rank Company Amount Round type
1 Databricks $5B Strategic
2 Firmus $2B Growth
3 Thrive Holdings $2B Not disclosed
4 SB Energy $1.5B Strategic
5 Hadrian $1.37B Series D
6 River AI $1.1B Series A
7 Domyn $1.1B Debt financing
8 Poolside $1B Not disclosed
9 Valar Atomics $1B Series B
10 XPeng Robotics $900M Series A

The ten largest AI funding deals took 51.4% of August’s AI funding, and nine of them reached $1B or more.

Databricks closed its round, upsized to $5B, in mid-August and earmarked the proceeds for AI agent products. Firmus took $2B in a growth round to build AI factories in Australia and Asia-Pacific, with Coatue, NVIDIA, Blackstone vehicles and Jane Street behind it. Thrive Holdings raised $2B from SoftBank, D1 Capital Partners and Altimeter Capital. Thrive is an AI-enabled services holding company that takes controlling stakes in accounting and IT services firms, so that money went to a buyer of operating businesses rather than to a company building a product.

NVIDIA joined the Firmus and River AI rounds and made two more of the ten on its own. It put $1.5B into SB Energy, a US-based, SoftBank-controlled data center and energy developer, and $1B into Poolside, the foundation model company, announced alongside a separate licensing deal that is excluded from the figure. Domyn’s roughly $1.1B was mostly borrowed and mostly pays for compute. Thrive Holdings, SB Energy, Poolside and Domyn together make up the four top-ten deals that were not conventional startup equity rounds.

Four of the ten are venture rounds recorded between Series A and Series D. Hadrian’s $1.37B Series D funds automated factories that machine metal parts for defense and aerospace programs. River AI raised $1.1B across a combined seed and Series A for tools that let companies train, tune and serve AI models they own. Valar Atomics raised a $1B Series B, backed by Sequoia Capital, to build small modular nuclear reactors with AI data centers as a primary customer. XPeng Robotics, XPeng’s humanoid robotics business, took $900M in its first outside round, which the company did not call a Series A but which is counted at Series A here. River AI, like Firmus and Poolside, sits in the compute and model layer that our AI infrastructure startups list tracks.

Which sectors raised the most AI funding in August 2026?

Primary sector Funding Deals Share
Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure $16.15B 71 48.9%
Manufacturing & Industrials $6.12B 47 18.5%
Enterprise Software $3.13B 29 9.5%
Energy & Sustainability $1.21B 11 3.7%
GovTech & Defense $1.01B 19 3.1%
Health & Biotech $1.01B 57 3.1%
Cybersecurity $816.81M 16 2.5%
FinTech $760.95M 44 2.3%
Marketing & Sales Tech $734.51M 21 2.2%
Retail & E-Commerce $706.45M 15 2.1%

By primary sector, Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure took 48.9% of August’s AI funding, $16.15B across 71 deals. Manufacturing & Industrials came second at 18.5%, $6.12B across 47 deals. Between them the two sectors held more than two-thirds of the month’s dollars, and the largest rounds decide most of that. Databricks, Firmus, River AI and Poolside all land in Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure, while Hadrian and XPeng Robotics are the two largest Manufacturing & Industrials rounds.

Count deals instead of dollars and the order changes. Health & Biotech had 57 deals, second only to Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure, on 3.1% of the dollars. FinTech had 44 deals for 2.3%. Energy & Sustainability went the other way, with 3.7% of the money on 11 deals.

By niche, AI Agents took $10.74B across 120 deals, the most deals of any niche in August. Cloud Computing followed at $5.67B across 23, then Data Management at $4.06B across 39, Industrial Automation at $2.45B across 40 and Compliance Automation at $2.23B across 22. Robotics took $2.23B across 23 and Generative AI $1.36B across 18. Robotics and Industrial Automation, the physical AI end of the market, each raised more than the Generative AI niche. Our AI agent startups funding guide covers the companies behind that first line.

Early-stage and late-stage AI funding in August 2026

Stage Funding Deals
Strategic $6.50B 3
Growth $6.17B 19
Series A $4.22B 78
Series B $4.09B 37
Series D $3.27B 11
Debt $3.19B 10
Series C $3.00B 18
Seed $1.07B 111
Other $564.18M 55
Series G+ $545M 1
Series E $250M 1
Pre-Seed $138.25M 52

Strategic investments and debt sit near the top of the stage table on very few deals. The Strategic line is the Databricks and SB Energy deals covered above, and Domyn’s roughly $1.1B is about a third of the Debt line. Together the two took more than Series A and Series B combined.

Series A raised slightly more than Series B, $4.22B across 78 rounds against $4.09B across 37. Two top-ten rounds explain the result. River AI at $1.1B and XPeng Robotics at $900M account for close to half of Series A dollars, and without them the stage would sit well below Series B.

Early-stage funding carries the deal count. Seed had 111 rounds for $1.07B, more than any other stage, and pre-seed had 52 for $138.25M, so early-stage AI startups made up the largest group of companies raising in August on a small share of the dollars. Late-stage funding went the other way, with growth rounds taking $6.17B on 19 deals, a figure that includes Thrive Holdings’ $2B and Poolside’s $1B, neither of which disclosed a round type. Our funding stage breakdown sets out how each stage is defined and what a normal round looks like at each step.

Most active investors in AI startups in August 2026

Y Combinator, the accelerator, joined the most AI deals in August, 19 rounds worth $2.05B in total, at a median disclosed round of $15M. Andreessen Horowitz came next with 13 deals worth $3.68B, at a $100M median, 7 of them at $100M or more, ranging from $7M to $1.37B. Sequoia Capital backed 7 deals worth $2.55B, 5 of them at $100M or more, for a $250M median.

These are participation counts. A round with six investors counts once for each of them, and each dollar figure is the combined size of every round an investor joined, not the amount that investor put in. The figures do not add up to a market total.

NVIDIA also backed several of the month’s largest rounds, covered in the largest-rounds section above.

Methodology

The figures cover 396 AI funding deals worth $33.01B announced during the calendar month of August 2026, worldwide with no geographic filter. Every deal in the repository is verified, deduplicated and AI-classified before it is counted. Totals include every type of AI funding, debt financing and strategic investments among them, alongside priced equity rounds. Medians and means use the 347 rounds that disclosed an amount, and non-USD rounds are converted to US dollars. Each deal is assigned to one primary sector, so sector deal counts sum to 396, while niches overlap because one company can work across several. Investor figures count participation, crediting every investor with the full round, and affiliated programs such as a firm’s accelerator are counted under their own names. Every amount is the size of a funding round. A valuation is a different figure and is never counted as a round size, so the AI funding total measures capital raised.
