AI Funding January 2026: Top Deals & Trends

October 31, 2026 · 8 min readBot Memo

By: Editorial Staff

AI funding in January 2026 reached $44.46B across 477 venture deals. One round, xAI’s $20B Series E on January 6, made up 45.0% of that total. Take xAI out and the other 476 deals shared $24.46B. Four rounds of $1B or more took 55.3% of the month’s capital, and the five largest took 57.0%.

That concentration is the main finding. The long tail was busy (170 Seed and Pre-Seed rounds, a median disclosed round of $12.85M), but it moved very little money. Below are the largest rounds, then the split by stage, sector, investor and country.

January 2026 AI Funding by the Numbers

Metric Value
Total funding $44.46B
Venture deals 477
xAI share of dollars 45.0%
Rounds of $1B or more 4 rounds, $24.6B (55.3%)
Top 5 rounds combined $25.35B (57.0%)

Median disclosed round $12.85M
Seed and Pre-Seed 170 deals (35.6%), 4.49% of dollars
AI agent deals 176 of 477 (36.9%)

Mega-rounds of $100M or more numbered 65, about one deal in seven, and absorbed $37.66B. The 170 Seed and Pre-Seed rounds together raised about $2.0B, less than the gap between xAI and the second-largest round of the month.

The Top 10 AI Deals of January 2026

xAI’s round was ten times the size of the next one, DayOne Data Centers’ $2B Series C. Only four rounds crossed $1B: xAI, DayOne, Skild AI and Humain. Valuations below are the figures reported at announcement; where a company did not disclose one, the cell says so.

Ranked bars of the largest AI rounds of January 2026: xAI 20 billion dollars, DayOne Data Centers 2 billion, Skild AI 1.4 billion, Humain 1.2 billion, Waabi 750 million, StepFun 718 million, Etched 500 million, Humans& 480 million, Redwood Materials 425 million, Cyera and ClickHouse 400 million each. 2 DayOne Data Centers $2B Series C Jan 5 Not disclosed Coatue Singapore
3 Skild AI $1.4B Series C Jan 14 Over $14B SoftBank Group Pittsburgh
4 Humain Up to $1.2B debt financing Jan 21 N/A National Infrastructure Fund Riyadh
5 Waabi $750M Series C Jan 28 Not disclosed Khosla Ventures, G2 Venture Partners Toronto

9 Redwood Materials $425M Series E Jan 28 Over $6B (reported) Eclipse Carson City, NV
10 (tie) Cyera $400M Series F Jan 8 $9B Blackstone New York
10 (tie) ClickHouse $400M Series D Jan 16 $15B Dragoneer San Francisco

Three notes on the list. Waabi’s $750M excludes a separate milestone-based commitment from Uber of up to $250M. Redwood Materials’ $425M is the final close of a Series E first announced in October 2025, and it is counted once, in January. DayOne’s January figure was the first close of its Series C; the round reached a final close of $4.5B in June 2026.

Two large January transactions are not venture rounds and sit outside every total here. USA Rare Earth’s $1.6B package from the U.S. Commerce Department is mostly a loan to a Nasdaq-listed company, with an equity stake attached. MiniMax listed in Hong Kong on January 9, which makes it an IPO, not a private round.

Compute and physical AI fill most of the top 10. DayOne and Humain build data-center capacity, Etched designs inference chips, and Skild AI and Waabi build models for robots and trucks. Skild AI’s round at a valuation above $14B was the largest robotics raise of the month; our top AI robotics startups list tracks the companies behind it. Humans& raised $480M at the Seed stage, the largest Seed round in the January data by a wide margin.

Where the Money Went: Sector Breakdown

A company listed under two verticals counts its full round in both, so the sector totals add up to more than $44.46B. Developer Tools & AI Infrastructure took $24.71B across 42 deals. Without xAI it still raised $4.71B, more than every other vertical except Manufacturing & Industrials.

Ranked bars of January 2026 AI funding by vertical: Developer Tools and AI Infrastructure 24.71 billion dollars across 42 deals, Manufacturing and Industrials 6.35 billion across 53, Energy and Sustainability 3.74 billion across 33, Transportation and Mobility 3.19 billion across 33, Health and Biotech 2.95 billion across 83, FinTech 2.89 billion across 73, Marketing and Sales Tech 1.71 billion across 49, Cybersecurity 1.41 billion across 26. The Investor Activity Map: Who Showed Up Most

Y Combinator backed the most January AI rounds, 24, half of them at Seed or Pre-Seed and most of the rest at Series A. Lightspeed Venture Partners followed with 16, then Sequoia Capital with 14 and Andreessen Horowitz with 13.

AI Native vs Augmented vs Adjacent: The Classification Mix

Every company is classified as AI Native (the AI is the product), AI Augmented (an existing product uses AI), AI Adjacent (it sells into the AI stack, such as data centers or databases) or AI Platforms (companies building the foundation models, model chips and general-purpose robot models that others build on).

Class Deals Share of deals Dollars
AI Native 300 62.9% $9.14B
AI Augmented 128 26.8% $5.55B
AI Adjacent 36 7.5% $6.06B
AI Platforms 13 2.7% $23.71B

AI Platforms had the fewest deals and the most money: 13 rounds raised $23.71B, or 53.3% of the month. That group includes xAI, Skild AI, StepFun, Etched and Humans&. AI Native companies made up most of the deal count, 300 of 477. AI agents were the most common product theme, covering 176 deals (36.9%); our AI agent funding guide covers those companies.

Geography: Where January’s AI Capital Landed

U.S.-headquartered companies raised $33.26B (74.8% of dollars) across 216 deals. Without xAI, the U.S. share of the remaining $24.46B falls to 54.2%. By deal count the U.S. had 45.3%, well below its dollar share.

United Kingdom $1.42B 39
Saudi Arabia $1.21B 5
India $1.06B 61
Canada $1.05B 17

India ranked second by deal count (61) and fifth by dollars ($1.06B), with only one round of $100M or more. The United Kingdom was third by deal count with 39 rounds and $1.42B. Singapore’s $2.16B was mostly DayOne, Saudi Arabia’s $1.21B was almost entirely Humain, and StepFun made up most of China’s $0.99B. Among U.S. metros, the San Francisco Bay Area led with 65 deals, followed by New York City (53), Boston (11), Austin (7) and Los Angeles (7). A company with offices in two metros counts in both; AI startup funding by city has the full ranking.

How January Compares With the Rest of Q1 2026

January was the smallest month of the quarter. February closed at $75.16B across 555 deals and March at $154.18B across 576, which puts Q1 2026 at $273.8B, with January contributing 16.2%. The February report and March report cover each month in detail, and AI mega-rounds in 2026 tracks the largest rounds across the year.

January’s own mix leaned on compute and physical AI. Data-center builders (DayOne, Humain), a chip designer (Etched) and robotics and autonomy companies (Skild AI, Waabi) filled five of the top seven places, all behind a single $20B round that took almost half the month’s capital.

Methodology

Figures cover 477 venture rounds announced by AI startups worldwide between January 1 and January 31, 2026. Every record is verified, deduplicated and AI-classified. Amounts in other currencies are converted to U.S. dollars. Secondary sales, public-company financings and IPOs are excluded, which is why USA Rare Earth and MiniMax do not appear. Sector totals use multi-vertical attribution, so they sum to more than the global total. Metro counts credit each city a company lists. Investor counts are rounds in which a firm participated, as lead or co-investor. Valuations are those reported at announcement. Data current as of October 31, 2026.
